Me and mom had no work one morning and were discussing our family ongoings. We arrived at the discussion of one of my paternal cousin's marriage.
My cousin is working presently and is of marriageable age. She fell in love with one of the guys at work and they decided to marry. The problem is that they are not of the same caste. My cousin is a Brahmin and her boyfriend is not (i dont know which caste he belongs to). Her father is still a little orthodox and opposed to "marriage outside the caste" (intercaste marriage - as they put it).
So, i innocently commented about this to mom ,"Why do they care about casteism in the 21st century?" To this, my mom replied ,"When me and your dad did not care in the 20th century, i dont know why people nowadays care." I was so shocked, surprised, flabbergasted and dumbfounded then.
All along my life, i thought my mother was a Brahmin and here she reveals to me in the most impossible way that she is not. Nothing had ever been taught to me about casteism (the various castes, differences etc.) at home, even though all Brahmin rituals were followed and all poojas conducted.
So, i realised that, eventually its the upbringing that matters not which caste or religion you are from. This is my sincere request to all my fellow human beings - please stop discrimanting people into castes and religions. Look into their heart and judge them by their personality, not by their religion or caste. Ciao!

I am personally against this casteism and differences made on the basis of religion. I cannot beleive that even 2day we have people not letting their children marry outside their caste..coz i feel at the end of the day, what matters is the family and not the caste. It all depends on the upbringing and there are more important issues in this world to deal with rather than fight agaisnt each other on the basis of caste and creed..WAke up guys...this needs proper attention!!
truly said... and its not only a hex for love birds but also causing adverse effect on modern society..when will we be bold enuff to break the creed of caste, religion , society etc etc.....and conversation between u and ur mother definitely sends a clear massage ...but main thing remains the same.. who's gonna heed... nicely written... keep penning...!!!!
Hmm....yeah, its actually surprising how intercaste marriages are still thought of as the norm, even in our supposedly liberal and metropolitan cities of today (in India, I mean). But I guess its to be expected, given that the previous generation (i.e. our parents) grew up in an India that was still uneducated, and orthodox in outlook....
Eventually, the marriage got finalised against all odds yesterday!
And they lived happily ever after...
They have just started off living the life they craved for. Hope (in fact, i am sure) all will be fine.
